«Persistent Fiction, Sustained Belief” is a new development of the “Lie Detector” project.
Lie Detector” uses sound, video, and lasers to influence the audience’s thoughts by exploiting the psychological mechanisms behind our ability — and inability — to confront fake news, misinformation, denial, and false memories. It avoids specific references to politics, climate, war, or current affairs, as these challenges are timeless and ongoing. Instead, it evokes an elusive, nagging sense that something is deeply wrong — where the “suspension of disbelief” is no longer a device for enjoying fiction, but an accepted part of daily reality.
During the residency, I will experiment with layered physical materials, new video, laser, and sound elements, and real-time processing of camera and microphone signals to shape the viewer’s experience.
Lie Detector received support from Fond for Lyd og Bilde and Kulturrådet.
The show includes lasers and rapid visual changes that may affect viewers with photosensitive conditions.
